Crash Nitro Kart - Pre-release Screenshots

Here is a bunch of pre-release screenshots that show the game in a slightly different form compared to how we know it.

Early Build 1

Early Build 1

(contributed by Kila Tiger, CBFan, Crashpro, Venusy, Layne, and Ghakimx)

Possibly the earliest build to be featured in official screenshots. Several differences and oddities can be found:

  • The words "TIME" and "LAP" aren't present in the HUD.
  • The speedometer looks different. It also seems to go below zero and above the top speed.
  • The exaust pipes are all golden and look different from any used in the final version. Smoke doesn't come out of them.
  • The anti-gravity knobs don't emit electricity.
  • Pura is never controlled by the CPU in the final version.
  • The corkscrew on the right screenshot has a stone texture instead of the final version's metalllic one.

Early Build 2

(contributed by Kila Tiger, CBFan, and Crashpro)

This seems to be a bit of an improvement over the previous build, though it has a bunch of quirks of its own:

  • The lap total is 0 somehow.
  • The character lineup on the left doesn't match the current standings or there are clones in the race.
  • Dingodile, Polar, and Pura are all racing in the same track. In the final version, no more than 2 CPU characters from the same team are ever found in races. Likewise, Pura is never controlled by the CPU in the final version.
  • The shield looks slightly different and harmless to other racers. Its icon is also blue despite this being reserved to when you have 10 fruits in hand. It also appears that CPU characters can use the shield, something that never happens in the final version.
  • The skid marks look different.
  • The bridge is in a different place from usual and there's a stone face above it. The shortcut that comes afterwards is missing.
  • A waterfall can be seen that isn't usually there.

Unused Icon/Power-up

Unused Icon/Power-up

(contributed by InsaneStar, Crash175, and Crystal_Blue)

The unused lightning bolt icon corresponded to the Static Shock Orb. It was eventually replaced with the one you see in the game, which depicts the actual orb.

The second icon is from an unused (and overpowered) voodoo doll that doesn't appear in the game (though you can still see its icon if you pause the game at the right time as your power-up is cycling randomly). It was originally meant to shrink down whoever was in first place and put a rain cloud over their head that slowed them down (much like the red beaker from Crash Team Racing). It also surrounded its user with a bright light and gave them a halo, making them faster and invulnerable, much like when you pick up a mask.

Later in development, the voodoo doll was changed so that it simply gave its user a Team Frenzy effect, granting them unlimited power-ups for a short time. The surrounding bright light was kept, but the halo was removed. This version of the voodoo doll can be found and used in the game's playable demo.

Debug Mode

Debug Mode

(contributed by InsaneStar and Crashpro)
  • Some debug coordinates appear below the time.
  • The early Static Shock Orb icon is seen in action.
  • The hang time meter is different.

Team Oddity

Team Oddity

(contributed by Ghakimx and Simon)
  • The teammate icon is flipped horizontally. This makes asymmetric characters like N. Gin display improperly.
  • The word 'TEAM' has a blue gradient. In the final version, this is reserved for Team Bandicoot, since Team Cortex is represented in red.
  • The explosion effect surrounding the teammate icon and the word 'TEAM' is blackish, rather than a bright yellow/orange.
  • The boost counter is placed right on top of the Team Frenzy gauge. It appears at the center of the screen in the final version.
  • The debug coordinates are shown again below the race time.

Head N. Clouds

Head N. Clouds

(contributed by Ghakimx)
  • Before it made its way to the game as Thunder Struck, this track was originally named Head N. Clouds and lacked the rain storm motif.
  • The anti-gravity knobs are emitting smoke instead of electricity.
  • The waterfall on the right isn't present in the final version.

Unused Speedometer

(contributed by Ntropydude)

These screenshots can all be found on the back of the game's PAL region box.

  • There's an unused horizontal version of the speedometer here. What makes this particularly odd is that these box screenshots are the only ones to feature it.
  • The first picture displays the lap counter as 0/0.
  • Crunch's NTSC-U icon is displayed despite these being on the box for the PAL version, which uses a new icon.

Prizes

Prizes

(contributed by Ghakimx)
  • The trophy looks very different.
  • The gem isn't textured.
  • The prize order is different.
  • More debug coordinates can be found below the blue relic and the red token.
