Penta is a small, black penguin with a chestnut-shaped head who wears a purple scarf around his neck. He's very short-tempered and usually tries to charge people money for just about anything. He has a girlfriend named Gurin.
Origin and Appearances
The little penguin is the only character in a Crash Bandicoot game to originate in derived media, as he first appeared in the Dansu! De Jump! Na Daibouken manga. Most players know him as the only secret character in Crash Team Racing that must be unlocked with a cheat code. He's unfinished in the NTSC-U version of the game, with some of his lines being placeholders and him being protected by Uka Uka. The remaining lines were recorded in time for the PAL version's release, and he is instead protected by Aku Aku as intended. In this version, he is also the best racer in the playable cast, having maxed-out stats all around.
Since there is no 3D model for Penta's winning/losing animations, the game instead reuses a generic penguin enemy from Crash 2. This was likely done to save development time, as Penta is a very minor character in the game and can't be unlocked without the respective cheat code.
Penta is most likely a tribute to the penguin protagonist with the same name from Artic Adventure, a 1983 video-game for the MSX.
Crash Team Racing
Due to time constraints during the development of Crash Team Racing (or perhaps because he's a secret character), Penta's true design is only seen while he's driving his kart. For podium cutscenes, the developers simply reused a common penguin from Crash Bandicoot 2, rather than a more detailed model like every other character.
