Description

A crabby green alien from planet Gasmoxia, Nitros Oxide is the self-proclaimed fastest racer in the galaxy. Looking for competition, he came across Earth and imposed a racing challenge, with the planet itself as the grand prize. Oxide planned to turn the entire globe into a concrete parking lot and enslave the population. This forced Crash Bandicoot and both his friends and foes to hold a tournament so they could decide who should race against him. After being exposed as a cheater and beaten at his own game twice, Oxide was revealed to be a sore loser and hightailed it back to his home planet.

Still bitter about his previous losses, Oxide decided to get revenge at the earthlings by bringing them into an intergalactic race competition held by the powerful Emperor Velo. Knowing Velo would never pass up the chance to abduct new racers for his championship, Oxide suggested that he found Crash and the others to force them to race again. He ultimately failed to prove himself as the superior racer once again, as even Velo himself was beaten by the earthlings.

Anecdotes

• Bob Rafei's concept art for the character reveals that he underwent a large number of designs before reaching his final form, including many that looked humanoid.
• His original plan was to use a so-called X Device to speed the whole planet up, giving Cortex a different reason to join the races in Crash Team Racing (he wanted to steal the device from Oxide for his own purposes). This plot was eventually dropped in favor of the one seen in the game.
