Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex - General Findings

Crash Bandicoot hacker LXShadow has managed to retrieve a lot of the game's development history through hacking.

E3 Hub Screens

E3 Hub Screens

An extra hub can be found in the disc. It's the E3 Hub, used to showcase the game when it was shown at E3 2001. All levels in the game have preview screens when you get close to them, and the E3 Hub was no exception. This image shows the screens that would appear for its levels.

While the hub is still accessible through hacking, the level buttons no longer work, so these screens had to be taken manually.

Fire Island

Fire Island

(contributed by LXShadow)

This is a removed volcano racetrack level. The files for it are called "FIRE_ISL", most likely standing for the provisory name of Fire Island.

Drain Damage

The level used in the second boss fight has a lot more to it than meets the eye. Special effects (such as rain) were turned off in these pictures to allow a clearer view of what's going on.

Proximity Crate

Proximity Crate

This crate's purpose is unknown at the time, but one theory suggests that it was supposed to activate platform lifts. This is because there's an activator for moving platforms with a name that starts with "proximity". On the other hand, it doesn't work when you get close to it, and the crate doesn't actually do anything. Another theory is that it could be one of the elemental crates that have been mentioned in several articles before the game's release.

Jumanji!

In the level Jungle Rumble, Crash would have been chased by more than just rhinos. This is a recreation of the original stampede. A warthog was also supposed to be present, but his AI is missing from the disc, so, unfortunately, he couldn't be present for the group photo.

Ice Station Bandicoot - New VS Old

(contributed by LXShadow)

As you may have read from the Early Prototype page, the land below the rings you go through in Ice Station Bandicoot used to be a level of its own. Note that the level would have been played as Crash, but Coco was used for these screenshots because Crash's animations won't display properly on-foot. Interestingly, the land is still solid nonetheless.

Click on a screenshot for a comparison between the level as is in the game and the beta version found in the old trailer.

Inside the Igloos

Inside the Igloos

(contributed by LXShadow)These igloos are emptier than Tiny's head.

Coco Warp-Out

(contributed by LXShadow)

Coco is always bumped out of the picture by Crash when you leave one of her levels. However, she does have her own animations for coming out of a level (i.e. being tossed out when you don't collect a prize or throwing the prizes you've collected into the air).
