Crash Nitro Kart - Unused Content - Data Leftovers

Like many other Crash games, Crash Nitro Kart contains some strings of data that point to unused features.

Online Mode

(contributed by crashandcortex1995)

The game was originally intended to have its own online mode where you could race against other players worldwide. You would be able to create a "Virtual Lobby" where players could join for a race, or you could join an existing lobby hosted by someone else. The team feature would be present, and there was also the option of joining a race as a spectator.

It seems like most (if not all) of the text strings related to this unused mode are still in the game's data. There are so many, in fact, that they amount to roughly half of all the text in the game. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Welcome to the Virtual Lobby. Here you may practice your skills while you wait for the race to start. When a player joins the game, an icon will appear on the left of the screen.
  • The game will begin once the host enters the Warp Vortex located in the center of the arena. To begin a battle you must drive to the center of the arena and enter the warp vortex. The vortex will take you and any players that have joined, to the level you selected.
  • To begin a race you must drive to the center of the arena and enter the warp vortex. The vortex will take you and any players that have joined, to the level you selected.

The remaining strings are mostly technical and refer to the player's online status or connection errors.

Extras

(contributed by crashandcortex1995)

Judging from certain strings, the game was going to have unlockable extras, including concept art, a making of, and some outtakes. How this would have panned out, however, remains a mystery.

Unused Arenas

(contributed by crashandcortex1995)

There are a couple of removed arenas referenced in the game's data, simply known as Arena 6 and 7. The actual stages, however, don't seem to be present, assuming they were even worked on in the first place. Arena 6 is referenced many times, but 7 only gets a mention towards the end of the game's data.
