Crash Bandicoot - General findings

Unused Characters

(contributed by Charles Zembillas and Joe Pearson)

Tiny Tiger and both Komodo Brothers were originally designed by Joe Pearson to be used in the first Crash Bandicoot. They ended up being pushed to the sequel, but you can still spot them in the unused animated intro to the game.

Blue N. Sanity Woods

Blue N. Sanity Woods

(contributed by Luca)This picture shows the first level, N. Sanity Beach, in the second part inside the woods. What's different here is that the color scheme is quite a bit changed. Everything seems to be very blue.

  • These two screenshots are very interesting for a number of reasons. The most noticeable one is the presence of various ordinary fruits floating about. There's a pineapple on the first screenshot, as well as a strawberry and a lime on the second one.

Gameplay designer Dave Siller has revealed that Crash was originally going to collect limes (worth 1 fruit), coconuts (1 fruit), lemons (1 fruit), strawberries (2 fruits), mangos (2 fruits), pineapples (3 fruits), and grapes (3 fruits). These were abandoned early on in favor of the more fictional (and more conventional) Wumpa fruits. This means the version in these screenshots is even earlier than the famous prototype.
  • On the first screenshot, Aku Aku looks a lot like a sprite instead of a 3D model. He's quite different.
  • Asides from the usual red steam exaust pipes, there are a few blue ones that don't appear in the game.
  • This level is Heavy Machinery, but its design is different in the second screenshot. There are exaust pipes instead of a floating platform.

Papu Papu looks slightly different here. He has a yellow hair ornament and bracelets instead of blue. This is actually how he appears in the promotional art for the game, suggesting that this is how he was originally intended to be.

Pink Crystals

Pink Crystals

The mine from the Koala Kong fight used to have pink crystals instead of green ones.
