Crash Bandicoot: WARPED - Dingodile

The following art and commentary was posted by Charles Zembillas on his blog. Charles was one of the main artists for the game and provided many of the original designs and ideas for the series. Check out Charles's blog for more art and development history, including not just Crash Bandicoot but also many other projects, such as Jak & Daxter.

Dingodile Origins 1

These are the very first development drawings of Dingodile who made his appearance in Crash Bandicoot 3. They are dated February 4 1998. Looks like I came up with a high volume for work on that day for this character. You'll see more in follow up posts. These were very happy times. Probably the best time as far as my relationship with Naughty Dog was going. I started my school just a couple of weeks before this and everything was in high spirits. When I came in to work on the project I was in the corner conference room on the top floor of the main office complex at Universal Studios. That's where ND was located before they left Universal to go on their own. A fun place to create.

The idea was to come up with a character that was half crocodile and half dingo. These sketches are my very first attempt at building out the concept. I don't know if they've ever been shown before. I think most of what you'll be seeing is a first in publication. Hope you enjoy these drawings guys.

Continuing with the my initial entry of the Origin of Dingodile from March 16 2013. Here's a few more images from the development of the character for his appearance in Crash Bandicoot 3. The art is dated February 4 1998.

At one point Dingodile wore a hat reminiscent of what you'd see in Australia...

I genuinely do not like this drawing and considered not including it in the presentation but I decided to show it anyway as it's part of how Dingodile came to be...

I dropped the hat and tried a mop of scruffy hair instead...

There was a moment when Dingodile walked on all fours...

These drawings are dated February 4 1998 while Crash 3 was under way. I wasn't provided with decent duplicates of the drawings I did for Naughty Dog. These are xeroxed copies I made when I created the images at their studio. In some of them parts of the composition are missing in the tail area. Good thing I made these copies as we're able to see the process of how he came about.

Continuing with the creation of everyone's favorite flame throwing half dingo half crocodile from Crash Bandicoot 3. These drawings are dated February 4 1998. (...) you can see a difference in how the feet of the character are formed. At this point we're just about at the final design. You can also see how I explored the look of Dingodile's head in various positions. These are black and white photocopies of the original drawings.

These are the last entries in the creation of Dingodile from Crash 3. They're dated February 12 1998. I was not provided with quality copies of this body of work by Naughty Dog and only have photocopies of the original images. In one instance I didn't get the entire composition. What I do have I'm showing here in black and white although the rendering was done with blue pencil along with black line. Color versions of the originals are online and you can see them through an image search of Dingodile.

The flame thrower was added after ND wanted him to be a fire breathing character. I suggested giving him a device to do this as it would make him much more interesting. This is as far as I went with the character. I'm happy he turned out well and that Dingodile has an enthusiastic following among Crash fans.
